Seville lies in the Guadalquivir Valley some 80 kilometres from the Atlantic coast, in a geographic setting that concentrates heat like few others in Europe. Its hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa) brings the hottest summers of any major Western European city — the valley's inland position cuts it off from the ocean breeze that moderates nearby coastal cities. Winters are mild with moderate rainfall, while summers are intensely hot and almost entirely dry.
On 23 July 1995, Seville recorded its all-time maximum temperature, among the highest reliably measured in continental Europe. In 2022, the city became the first in the world to officially name a heatwave — designating a major event as 'Zoe' — as part of a pilot programme to raise public awareness of extreme heat as a climate hazard. Seville's low latitude and inland valley position mean that summer heat is not just a recurring feature of life here, but an intensifying one.
The year peaks in July, at 27.9°C over the day and around 34.9°C by mid-afternoon. Roughly 120 days a year now top 30°C. In January, daily means drop to roughly 10.6°C, with nights dipping to 6.4°C.
