Málaga sits on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain, on the Mediterranean shore with the Montes de Málaga rising behind it. Those hills block cold air pushing down from the north, which gives the city the warmest winters of any European city of its size. The hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa) means hot, dry summers and around 300 days of sunshine in a typical year, with rain confined to a few dozen days in the cooler months.
Summer and early autumn can turn humid as sea breezes carry moisture off the warm Mediterranean and onshore. The local curiosity is the terral, a hot, dry wind blowing down off the inland hills that can send temperatures spiking for a day or two, the exact opposite of the cooling sea breeze. Outside those spells, Málaga's climate comes down to plain, dependable warmth.
The year peaks in August, at 26.2°C over the day and around 30.4°C by mid-afternoon. On about 95 nights a year, the temperature never drops below 20°C. At the other extreme, January averages 12.1°C, with typical overnight lows of 8.9°C. Frost is essentially unknown.
