Salt Lake City lies in a broad valley between the Wasatch Range to the east and the Oquirrh Mountains to the west, on the eastern edge of the Great Basin, with a hot-summer continental climate with dry summers (Köppen Dsa). The valley topography has two defining consequences: in summer the basin heats intensely under low humidity, producing dry and blazing days; in winter, cold air pools in the bowl and high pressure can stagnate over the Great Basin, trapping pollution in a persistent temperature inversion that can degrade air quality for weeks.
The Great Salt Lake immediately to the northwest generates lake-effect snowfall, particularly on the western slopes of the Wasatch Range, contributing perhaps a tenth of the city's annual snowfall on around six to eight events per year. The surrounding Wasatch mountains attract far heavier snowfall than the valley, underpinning Utah's ski industry. Pacific storms dominate the wet season from autumn through spring, while summer sees monsoon thunderstorms bring brief but intense afternoon rain — a climate so geographically specific that it is almost impossible to replicate elsewhere.
The year peaks in July, at 26.0°C over the day and around 33.5°C by mid-afternoon. In a typical recent year, around 95 days reach 30°C or more. At the other extreme, January averages -2.2°C, with typical overnight lows of -6.1°C.
In total, Salt Lake City averages about 545 mm of precipitation a year; April is usually the wettest month (68 mm) and July the driest (13 mm).
