Ottawa stands at the confluence of the Ottawa and Rideau rivers in southeastern Ontario, with a warm-summer humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb). The city's inland position leaves it exposed to Arctic air masses pushing south from the north without any ocean to moderate them. Winters are long, cold and snowy, with temperatures routinely falling well below freezing for extended periods and polar intrusions capable of bringing extreme cold snaps. Summers are warm and can be genuinely humid — a contrast that defines life in the Canadian capital across the full swing of the year.
Snow and ice are recurring winter features, and significant storms can disrupt the city even though Ottawa is experienced at managing them — a major winter storm in January 2022 reminded residents how disruptive extreme cold-season events remain. Spring and autumn are brief but dramatic, with temperatures swinging from sub-zero nights to warm days within the space of a week. The city's wide seasonal swing — from some of the coldest prolonged winter cold in a national capital to genuinely hot and humid summer conditions — is the defining feature of Ottawa's continental climate.
