Munich sits at about 520 metres on the Bavarian plateau, within sight of the Alps to the south. Its climate is temperate oceanic shading into continental (Köppen Cfb bordering Dfb): summers are warm with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and winters are cold and often overcast, though mild for such an elevated, inland location. The nearby mountains lift the rainfall totals, with the wettest months in summer and the driest in late winter.
A distinctive feature is the föhn, a warm, dry downslope wind off the Alps that can send temperatures climbing sharply within hours and, on clear days, brings the mountains into crisp view. Summer thunderstorms can turn severe, bringing hail, while winters deliver reliable snow.
The warmest month is July, with a daily mean around 18.1°C and typical afternoon highs of 23.0°C. In January, daily means drop to roughly -1.0°C, with nights dipping to -3.9°C.
