Guadalajara sits at nearly 1,600 metres on the Jalisco Plateau of the Mexican Highlands, with a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cwa) that its elevation makes considerably more comfortable than the low-lying tropics. The year divides sharply into two contrasting seasons: a long, warm and largely dry period from October through May, and a concentrated summer wet season from June through September, when the Intertropical Convergence Zone moves north and draws in the moisture-laden air that brings the rains. Winter days are warm and sunny; spring grows increasingly hot and dry before the rainy season arrives with relief.
The rainy season is driven by intense afternoon convective storms that build daily, often delivering heavy rain, thunder and hail in a matter of hours before clearing to leave cool evenings. July is the wettest month, when a quarter or more of the annual total can fall in brief, concentrated bursts. The city's altitude insulates it from truly tropical heat, making Guadalajara broadly temperate in character — an unusual quality for one of Mexico's largest urban centres.
The year peaks in May, at 24.2°C over the day and around 32.1°C by mid-afternoon. At the other extreme, January averages 16.7°C, with typical overnight lows of 9.9°C. Frost is essentially unknown.
