Dublin has a temperate maritime climate (Köppen Cfb), with mild-warm summers, cool winters and very little in the way of temperature extremes. Sitting on the east coast, sheltered from the prevailing Atlantic weather by the bulk of Ireland, it is the driest place in the country — receiving only about half the rainfall of the west coast. The result is a gentle, changeable, often cloudy climate in which neither great heat nor severe cold is common.
Within that narrow range, the weather still varies markedly from year to year — Dublin has recorded both notably wet years and unusually dry, sunny ones over the decades. Genuine extremes are infrequent: hot days are rare and short-lived, and lasting snow or hard frost is uncommon in the mild maritime air.
July brings the year's peak warmth: daily means of 15.9°C, with afternoons typically reaching 18.8°C. At the other extreme, January averages 5.8°C, with typical overnight lows of 3.7°C.
