Birmingham has a temperate maritime climate (Köppen Cfb), like the rest of England, but its setting changes the details: sitting well inland in the Midlands at a comparatively high elevation, it is one of the snowier large British cities. The overall pattern is mild and changeable — cool, damp and often cloudy through much of the year, without the extremes of more continental places.
For a temperate city it has a notable history of severe local weather. Damaging tornadoes have struck more than once, including a deadly tornado in 1931 and, in July 2005, the costliest tornado on record in the United Kingdom. Like the rest of the country, Birmingham reached unprecedented heat during the July 2022 heatwave, and it has seen sharp cold snaps in past hard winters.
