Climate overview

Birmingham has a temperate maritime climate (Köppen Cfb), like the rest of England, but its setting changes the details: sitting well inland in the Midlands at a comparatively high elevation, it is one of the snowier large British cities. The overall pattern is mild and changeable — cool, damp and often cloudy through much of the year, without the extremes of more continental places.

For a temperate city it has a notable history of severe local weather. Damaging tornadoes have struck more than once, including a deadly tornado in 1931 and, in July 2005, the costliest tornado on record in the United Kingdom.
