Climate overview

Turin stands at the western edge of the Po Valley in northwestern Italy, right at the foot of the Alps. Despite the mountain backdrop it has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa), with four clear seasons: moderately cold, dry winters and warm summers down on the plain. Most of the rain comes in spring and autumn, and thunderstorms build over the city through the hottest months.

Winter and autumn bring the dense fog the Po Valley is notorious for, though Turin's position at the mouth of the Susa Valley spares it some of the worst that settles over the open plains. Snow falls most winters without often piling up, and a föhn wind spilling off the Alps can clear the skies and dry the air in a matter of hours. The mountains, rarely out of view, shape the city's weather as much as its scenery.
