Panama City stretches along the Pacific shore of the isthmus, near the southern end of the canal. Its tropical savanna climate (Köppen Aw) is hot and very humid the year round, with temperatures that scarcely budge from month to month. Lying under the Intertropical Convergence Zone, the city stays cloudy much of the time, and even at the height of the dry season the sun is often veiled.
The year turns on rain rather than temperature. A long wet season from May to November brings frequent downpours and thunderstorms, while the months from December to April are noticeably drier. Those same rains feed the forests around the canal, whose water keeps the locks working, so the seasonal rhythm of the weather is tied up with the waterway that made the city.
The warmest month is April, with a daily mean around 26.9°C and typical afternoon highs of 29.9°C. The coolest month is November, when daily means fall to about 25.9°C and overnight lows sit around 24.3°C.
In total, Panama City averages about 2197 mm of precipitation a year; July is usually the wettest month (300 mm) and February the driest (18 mm).
