Osaka sits at the heart of the Kansai region on Japan's Honshū island, with a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa) of four distinct seasons. An early-summer rainy season called the tsuyu, or plum rains, typically runs from early June to late July, bringing weeks of damp, cloudy weather before the peak of summer heat. Summers are very hot and humid, while winters are generally mild and often sunny, with snowfall rare in the city centre.
Late summer and autumn bring typhoon season, when tropical systems tracking across the western Pacific can hit the Kansai coast. In September 2018, Typhoon Jebi struck the Osaka Bay area as the most powerful typhoon to make landfall in Japan in 25 years, producing the highest storm surge ever recorded in Osaka Bay and flooding Kansai International Airport — the worst typhoon impact the region had seen in a generation.
The warmest month is August, with a daily mean around 28.4°C and typical afternoon highs of 32.4°C. On about 120 nights a year, the temperature never drops below 20°C. In January, daily means drop to roughly 5.2°C, with nights dipping to 1.9°C.
In total, Osaka averages about 1494 mm of precipitation a year; June is usually the wettest month (217 mm) and December the driest (54 mm).
