Naples has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa) that borders on humid subtropical, set on its famous bay beneath Mount Vesuvius. The Tyrrhenian Sea moderates the city, giving hot, humid summers and mild winters in which hard frost is rare. Most of the rain falls in autumn and winter, often in heavy bursts, while summers are warm, dry and sunny.
The sirocco, a sultry south wind off the Sahara, can bring oppressive humidity that ends in rain. Snow is very rare in the city itself, though it dusts nearby Vesuvius — a reminder of how sharply the bay's mild coast contrasts with the heights just inland.
August brings the year's peak warmth: daily means of 24.8°C, with afternoons typically reaching 25.9°C. On about 120 nights a year, the temperature never drops below 20°C. The coolest month is January, when daily means fall to about 10.9°C and overnight lows sit around 9.5°C. Frost is essentially unknown.
