Marseille sits on the Mediterranean coast of southern France, near the mouth of the Rhône, and ranks among the sunniest and driest large cities in the country. Its hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa) brings hot, dry summers and mild winters, with rain squeezed into the cooler months. Snow is a rarity, and more than half of all years pass without any at all.
The signature of the place is the mistral, a cold, dry wind that funnels down the Rhône valley and sweeps over the city, most often in winter and spring. It can be fierce and chilling, but it also scrubs the air and leaves behind the brilliant blue skies the coast is famous for. Between mistral episodes the Mediterranean keeps the city warm, and long summer drought is the rule rather than the exception.
The warmest month is August, with a daily mean around 23.3°C and typical afternoon highs of 25.9°C. Around 75 nights a year stay above 20°C. The coolest month is January, when daily means fall to about 8.4°C and overnight lows sit around 6.3°C. Frost is essentially unknown.
