Lyon stands at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, northwest of the French Alps and southeast of the Massif Central, in a position that exposes it to both Mediterranean warmth and Atlantic moisture. Its humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa) brings cold winters and warm to hot summers, with rainfall spread fairly evenly through the year. The valley setting between the mountains channels seasonal winds and can concentrate summer heat arriving from the Mediterranean corridor.
Lyon is particularly prone to extreme heat events, as the valley geometry traps hot air. During the catastrophic European heatwave of August 2003, the city passed 40°C — an event that caused thousands of excess deaths across France and made clear the vulnerability of the Rhône valley cities to prolonged extreme heat. Lyon has also recorded some of its most extreme cold in December, including a historic low set on 22 December 1938 — the same continental exposure that drives both ends of the temperature spectrum.
The warmest month is July, with a daily mean around 21.6°C and typical afternoon highs of 26.9°C. Roughly 45 days a year now top 30°C. In January, daily means drop to roughly 3.7°C, with nights dipping to 0.7°C.
