Climate overview

Jerusalem stands at around 750 metres in the Judaean Mountains, on the divide between the Mediterranean to the west and the Dead Sea and desert to the east. The elevation hands it a Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa) cooler and fresher than either the coast or the Jordan valley far below. Summers are warm and reliably dry; winters are cool and wet, with the year's rain confined to the colder months.

The hill-country setting occasionally produces something the surrounding lowlands almost never see: snow. It is irregular and rarely heavy, but every so often a winter storm dusts the old city white and brings it to a halt. Set between the dry Mediterranean summer and a damp, sometimes raw winter, Jerusalem's weather owes more to its altitude than to its latitude.
