Florence lies in a natural basin in the Arno valley, enclosed on three sides by hills — Fiesole, Settignano, Arcetri and others — with a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa). The sheltered topography blocks prevailing winds and traps heat, making Florence markedly hotter in summer than coastal Tuscany at the same latitude. Summers are hot and largely dry; winters are cool, damp and occasionally frosty, with most of the year's rain falling between autumn and early spring.
The same bowl of hills that makes Florence so visually dramatic also locks in summer heat more intensely than the surrounding countryside. On 26 July 1983 the city set its all-time temperature record — an event that underscored the valley's exceptional heat-trapping character. Heatwaves have recurred in more recent decades, and the enclosed historic centre, densely built in stone and brick, means overnight temperatures stay high even after intense daytime peaks.
July brings the year's peak warmth: daily means of 24.5°C, with afternoons typically reaching 29.9°C. Roughly 65 days a year now top 30°C. In January, daily means drop to roughly 5.7°C, with nights dipping to 2.5°C.
