Doha spreads across a flat, low-lying coast on the central-eastern shore of Qatar, facing the Persian Gulf, with a hot desert climate (Köppen BWh). The city endures some of the most intense summer heat on Earth — average high temperatures from May through September surpass 38°C and can approach 45°C — while the proximity of the warm, shallow Gulf adds oppressive humidity that makes the heat feel more extreme still. Winters, by contrast, are warm by global standards but genuinely pleasant, with comfortable conditions from December through February.
On 14 July 2010, Doha registered the highest temperature ever recorded in Qatar. Rainfall across the year is extremely sparse, concentrated in occasional winter storms, and the summer months can pass without any rain at all. The broader region of the Gulf receives almost no summer precipitation, and Doha's desert surroundings reinforce the stark seasonality that defines life on the peninsula.
The warmest month is August, with a daily mean around 35.0°C and typical afternoon highs of 39.9°C. At the other extreme, January averages 17.5°C, with typical overnight lows of 13.9°C. Freezing temperatures almost never occur.
Doha averages only about 62 mm a year, and what little falls comes mostly around December.
