Climate overview

Budapest has a transitional climate (Köppen Cfa/Dfa), poised between the more extreme conditions of the Great Hungarian Plain to the east and the milder, wetter Transdanubia to the west. Set in the Carpathian Basin and split by the Danube, it has a markedly continental rhythm: warm to hot summers and cold winters, with changeable springs.

Both ends of the year can turn severe — winters occasionally bring heavy snow and hard freezes, while summers can deliver spells of oppressive heat and humidity. The Danube itself was once a recurring threat: flooding in Pest was endemic until the river was regulated in the 19th century, a reminder of how central the great river is to the city's setting.
