Brussels has a temperate oceanic climate (Köppen Cfb), mild, damp and changeable in classic north-west European fashion. Marine air drawn in off the nearby Atlantic, together with the region's low-lying wetlands, keeps temperatures moderate and the weather unsettled, with warm summers, cool winters and rain possible at any time of year.
Wet, grey and breezy days are the norm — measurable rain falls on roughly a third of the year — while snow is infrequent, amounting on average to only a couple of weeks' worth of days. Summer can bring sharp thunderstorms, but genuine extremes of heat or cold are both relatively rare in the steady, moisture-laden maritime air that flows in off the ocean.
