Climate overview

Bengaluru (Bangalore) rises at about 900 metres on the Mysore Plateau, part of the broader Deccan Plateau of peninsular India, with a tropical savanna climate (Köppen Aw) that its altitude makes considerably more pleasant than India's lowland cities. The combination of elevation and latitude keeps temperatures from reaching the extremes of the coasts or northern plains. Rainfall arrives in two monsoon pulses — from the southwest through the summer months and from the northeast in the post-monsoon season — with September typically the wettest month.

The dry season from December through February is the coolest part of the year, with nights that can dip well below typical tropical minimums for the latitude. Unlike most Indian cities, Bangalore largely avoids the punishing pre-monsoon heat of March to May, thanks to its elevation. In 2022, abnormally intense monsoon rainfall caused severe flooding across large parts of the city, underlining the vulnerabilities of a rapidly expanding urban area in a climate that is shifting alongside the rest of South Asia.
