Addis Ababa weather by month — averages, rainfall & climate trends

Set at over 2,300 metres in the Ethiopian highlands, Addis Ababa is among the highest capital cities in the world — its altitude produces a remarkably mild and stable climate despite sitting deep in the tropics, softened by two rainy seasons and crisp highland air. Average temperatures and rainfall by month, a climate graph, today's conditions versus the long-term average, and how the climate has shifted since 1940 — all on one page for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Climate overview

Addis Ababa sits at over 2,300 metres in the Ethiopian highlands, with a subtropical highland climate (Köppen Cwb) where the high elevation moderates temperatures year-round, keeping them remarkably constant from month to month. Two distinct rainy seasons punctuate the year: a shorter rains period from roughly February through May, and a longer, heavier wet season from June to mid-September — which is paradoxically the coldest part of the year, as persistent cloud and rain reduce sunshine hours.

The long rains bring the heaviest downpours, often accompanied by hail — a characteristic of high-altitude convective storms over the Ethiopian highlands. The dry season from November through January is the clearest and coolest part of the year, with crisp highland air and sharp temperature swings between warm sunny days and cold nights. The city's extraordinary elevation and dual rainy-season pattern set it apart from almost every other African capital.

The year peaks in April, at 16.6°C over the day and around 22.9°C by mid-afternoon. The coolest month is December, when daily means fall to about 13.9°C and overnight lows sit around 7.2°C. Freezing temperatures almost never occur.

In total, Addis Ababa averages about 1979 mm of precipitation a year; August is usually the wettest month (422 mm) and December the driest (11 mm). A typical year brings rain or snow on around 170 days.

Over the full record (since 1940), the annual mean temperature in Addis Ababa has risen by 2.3°C between its first decade and its last. Days above 25°C have grown noticeably more frequent — from around 5 a year in the first decade to about 50 in the last.

Climate stripes

Annual mean shifted from 1940–1949 to 2016–2025 by +2.3°C.

Each vertical stripe is one year. Color encodes how much that year's annual mean differed from the long-term average. Average = each year's annual mean compared to the average of all years (1940–2026). cooler ← → warmer

Annual mean temperature

Long-term trend: +0.29°C per decade.

One point per year — the temperature averaged across the whole year. The dashed line is the least-squares long-term trend. Based on ERA5 reanalysis — modelled estimates, not station readings.

Seasonal warming

Mar–May is warming fastest: +0.34°C per decade.

Each faint line is one three-month period's average per year; the bold dashed line is its long-term trend. Different parts of the year often warm at different rates. Based on ERA5 reanalysis — modelled estimates, not station readings.

Hot days vs frost days

Days ≥ 25°C per year: 4.8 early in the record → 50.5 recently. Frost days: 0 → 0.

Thin lines are raw yearly counts; thick lines are the smoothed trend that removes year-to-year noise. The hot-day threshold is auto-picked per city so the line actually moves. Average = a centered 5-year rolling average to smooth weather noise.

Yearly hot & cold extremes

One point per year — the single hottest and coldest day recorded that year.

Annual rainfall

~1979 mm/year on average. Last decade ran −3% vs that average. Long-term trend: 27 mm per decade.

One bar per year of total rainfall. Dashed line is the long-term average. Average = the average annual rainfall across every year of record (1940–2026).

Day-by-day grid

Each tiny square is one calendar day across the full record — ~30,000 days per city. Use the mode switch above the chart: Anomaly colors each day by how far it ran from the historical average for that date (red = warmer, blue = cooler), Daily mean temp shows the absolute mean temperature for the day (useful to see seasons and heatwaves), and Precipitation shows daily rainfall (useful to spot wet/dry seasons and droughts). Average = the long-term average for that calendar date (1940–2026).
