Climate overview

North Macedonia's climate spans three main zones shaped by its complex geography: Mediterranean influence dominates the southern regions including the Vardar and Strumica valleys with warm, dry summers; continental characteristics prevail in the northern and northwestern areas; while mountainous regions such as the Šar, Korab, and Pelister mountain ranges experience alpine conditions with significant snowpack. The country experiences four distinct seasons, though spring is notably brief, with summers reaching subtropical extremes exceeding 40°C and winters that are moderately cold with frequent snowfall, particularly in elevated areas.

North Macedonia has faced intensifying climate stresses in recent decades, including the severe 2007 Southeast Europe heatwave that brought temperatures of 43–44°C throughout the region, widespread wildfires recurring annually in the drought-prone Vardar valley, severe flooding events such as those documented in 2016, and repeated summer heatwaves in 2017 and 2024 that have impacted agriculture, water resources, and public health across the country.
